As part of a Million Acts of Hope, members of Brockenhurst WI took part in a litter pick. Our environment matters to us and we want to keep the New Forest Animals from the harm that litter can cause them.

The Craft Group have had two meetings where members were taught some Macrame skills and also worked on Christmas Wreaths for the New Forest Show.

The Knitting Group, run by Suzanne, has been very busy this month. The group first met on Monday 4th May and now takes place on alternate Mondays (every two weeks) from 2.00–4.00pm. The sessions are open to everyone — beginners, intermediate knitters and experienced knitters alike. There is always something new to learn, from different knitting techniques to new stitches and patterns. At our first meeting, members knitted baby bootees for Ukraine, where there is also a great need for knitted blankets. The group learnt an alternative casting-on method which creates a much neater, non-looped edge, as well as techniques for keeping the edges of knitting tidy and even.
At the second meeting on 18th May, members learnt how to knit a beautiful poinsettia flower using red and green wool. Each flower requires nine petals and three leaves and can be used on a wreath, as a Christmas table decoration, or even made into a brooch using different coloured yarns. Suzanne also adapted the pattern slightly to introduce a new stitch, ensuring that both sides of the petals looked identical when decreasing.
Our next meeting will be on Monday 1st June, when the group will begin making Seamen’s Hats for the charity Mission to Seafarers. Any members who would like to join the group, needs help with a pattern, or would like knitting advice are very welcome to join.
