On a beautiful summer’s evening we gathered for our AGM, it always comes around so quickly every year. We welcomed 42 members and 3 visitors, the usual rendering of Jerusalem in the warm summer breeze was enjoyed by everyone and birthday posies were given out to Pat Worn, Anne Panayi and Christine O’Connor. Welcome packs were given out to our new members Elaine Blachford, Anne Panayi and Janet Ward – a huge welcome to all 3 of you. Two of our guests stood up and spoke to the group about their social group called Brockenhurst Gateway. Mike Snell and his daughter Jessica were appealing for volunteers for their weekly group activities meeting in the village Hall, the purpose of the club is that young disabled and challenged people can meet and socialise, play games, take on theatre projects and outings etc. Jessica showed us many items that she had made including bird feeders and cloth bags and the members were delighted to show their appreciation.
Other items in the business section were that this 3rd November 2018 is World Kindness Day – a day to be kind and carry out acts of thoughtfulness that will bring happiness to others. To this end it was proposed that a sub committee was formed so that we may recognise and celebrate the day here in Brockenhurst. Our darts team played their first match and won 3-0 (great cheers) and a tour of the Cadland Estate with a cream tea was also proposed as well as the options for our August outing (watch this space)!! A beautiful Lily of the Valley (from Pam McKinlay) won this month’s flower competition.
This year’s Annual Federation Meeting Resolution is taking place in Cardiff on 6th June and every WI has one vote. The chosen resolution is Mental Health Matters – to ensure that people recognise that mental health issues are as important in society today as physical health issues. A unanimous vote was shown by all.
A financial report for the year was given by Sue Garrod (Treasurer) including the P&L from the recent successful Needlework Fiesta. Then Karen Whitty (Secretary) gave her annual report detailing the activities of the year closely followed by Janette Smethurst (President) who gave her annual review, thanked everyone who had supported her and summed up the year followed by a vote on the adoption of the report – as ever, it amazes us how much we do in 12 months – it was lovely to have a reminder. Then we had the voting for the President for 2018/2019. Three people were nominated, two very politely declined leaving our current President in the hot seat – thankfully she agreed to serve another term which is brilliant for our WI as she’s done a great job!! So, in closing Janette Smethurst was re-elected, we’re in good financial shape and we have a healthy membership of 65 delightfully deranged and different ladies!
Join us every 2nd Monday of the month at 7.30pm in Brockenhurst Village Hall and see why the WI can make a difference to your life.
