Our speaker was Alan Frampton, and he talked about Morris Dancing. A fascinating insight into this tradition which was male dominated but today fortunately women have joined to keep the tradition alive.
Alan is a member of the New Forest Meddlars and they meet at Emery Down Village Hall to practice.
The name Morris it is thought to have originated from the medieval word Moorish, dating back to Medieval times. Alan went through the different styles and types of Morris Dancing throughout the country. Each group is accompanied by musicians who practice with the dancers. A lot of money is raised for local charities. They have started going into schools to teach some dances as part of the curriculum to try and keep Morris dancing alive.
Alan brought a selection of instruments, clothing worn and props as well as musical instruments to show us. Certainly an interesting insight into this type of folk dance.

Julie wishes to thank all members who generously gave a selection of toys for Ukraine. June 1st is the International Day for The Protection of Children in Ukraine and these items are winging their way to Ukraine for the children there.

Maureen was in charge of the raffle and as always did a great job.

There were lots of sign-up sheets for the various activities happening this month.
Our Competition of the month was a flower. This was won by Maureen.

At our next meeting on June 12th 2023 when we will welcome Tony Gilks who will talk about Jewels in the Crown (history behind the Coronation regalia). We meet at Brockenhurst Village Hall at 7pm for 7.30pm on the second Monday of the month. If you would like more information please email brockenhurstpres@hampshirewi.org.uk
